A bull. An elephant. One head.

Carved into the stone of the Airavatesvara Temple near Kumbakonam in the 12th century, the Rishabha-Kunjara is one of the Chola sculptors’ most quietly brilliant illusions. Seen from one side it is Vrishabha, the sacred bull. Seen from the other it is Kunjara, the elephant.

Here, that ancient riddle becomes the centrepiece of a monumental Tanjore composition. Shiva and Parvati ride the bull and Vishnu and Lakshmi the elephant, enthroned beneath twin temple arches. Around them, a procession of panels unfolds: Nataraja in his cosmic dance, Ganesha, Venugopala, Lakshmi, Sharabha, and scenes drawn from temple lore.

Built up in hand-raised gesso relief and finished in 22K gold leaf, the work holds light the way temple lamps once did, changing with every hour of the day.
